With Honor Convocation officially rescheduled for Monday (8/29) at 3 pm, we can confirm that our rescheduled History and American Studies welcome picnic for first year students and prospective majors will be immediately following Convocation.

Have a safe weekend and we’ll see you Monday!

485 Meeting Moved to Wednesday

Thanks to Hurricane Irene, we’ll be moving our History and American Studies introductory meeting for 485 students from Monday, 8/29, to Wednesday, 8/31 at 5 pm in Monroe 346.

This meeting is for students in American Studies or History who are enrolled in a 485 senior thesis course for this current Fall semester.

Doing a 485? Don’t Miss the Meeting on Monday (8/29)

All students who are doing a History or American Studies 485 (senior thesis) should plan on attending a mandatory meeting with Dr. Jeffrey McClurken on Monday, August 29th. The meeting will be held at 5 p.m. in Monroe 346, the new classroom on the 3rd floor of the renovated Monroe Hall.

Syllabi for both HIST485 and AMST485 are now available at the site here (see page links above.)

Dr. Jeffrey McClurken to Discuss Civil War Families on Public Radio

When the Civil War ended, Confederate veterans and their families were faced with rebuilding their lives while also coming to terms with defeat.  Jeffrey McClurken will share his research on how Confederate veteran families adjusted to life in the postwar South during an interview on the “With Good Reason” public radio program beginning Saturday, August 20.

Author of a new book that’s being called the “most complete community-based study of how Confederate veteran families adjusted in the postwar South,” Jeffrey McClurken is Associate Professor and Chair of the History and American Studies Department at the University of Mary Washington.

The interview can be heard on August 20 at 4:30 p.m. on WCVE 88.9 FM and on Monday, August 22 at 12:30 a.m. on WAMU 88.5 FM. A podcast for online listening is also available here.

Welcome!

August is here and we’re looking forward to the coming 2011-12 academic year!

To kick things off, the History and American Studies Department is welcoming 1st-year prospective majors to a picnic next Thursday (8/25). Co-sponsored by History honorary society Phi Alpha Theta, this picnic will provide students with an informal opportunity to meet faculty and student majors while also enjoying an excellent picnic supper at the house of Professor William Crawley (emeritus). First-year prospective majors should already have received an invitation (if you were overlooked, please send a note to department administrator Lisa Patton at lpatton [at] umw [dot] edu.)

In other news, we also have an upcoming meeting for all students who are undertaking their senior theses this fall. Stay tuned for another announcement with full information as well as a link to the current 485 syllabus.

Best wishes for a productive and interesting fall semester!
