Saturday 26 March 2011

At Virginia Wesleyan College, Norfolk/Va. Beach, VA

Paper submission, Registration and Fee Payment Deadline: Friday February 18, 2011

Virginia Wesleyan College is proud to host the 2011 Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society VA Regional Conference. We invite PAT members from all VA campuses to submit graduate and undergraduate papers on any topic of history.  Papers submitted (four copies plus completed registration form, please) by the February 18 deadline will be judged by historians outside the state for awards in Graduate and Undergraduate divisions of World, European, and United States History. Papers submitted to be judged may be of any reasonable length; however, by the time of the conference students must refine and edit their papers into a 20 minute presentation, which equals about 10-11 typed, double spaced pages when read aloud. Each of our conference rooms is equipped with computer, projector, and Video/DVD technology for those who choose to use it.

A registration fee of $25 and a completed registration form (attached) must accompany four copies of each paper submission.   The registration fee helps us provide morning snacks, a buffet luncheon, an honorarium for the keynote speaker, and prizes for all our student winners.

Detailed travel and lodging directions to follow.

Summer Internships at the Newberry Library

The Newberry Library offers internships in most of its departments. Newberry interns benefit professionally and intellectually from challenging work assignments as well as participation in the Library’s lively community of scholars. Interns are supervised individually by Newberry staff members, who serve as mentors and insure that the internship has a robust educational component. In addition to their individual assignments, interns learn about other dimensions of the Library through group presentations, tours, and events such as the weekly colloquium. (At the colloquium, the Newberry community gathers to hear an informal talk, usually focused on the collections or a current research project within the Library, followed by discussion and accompanied by refreshments.)

Although these opportunities are unpaid, many previous interns have earned academic credit for their Newberry experience. Undergraduates and graduate students in the humanities, social sciences, library and information science, performing arts, journalism, communications, marketing, graphic design, and museum studies, as well as postgraduates with backgrounds in these fields, may apply for available internships. Please refer to the individual internship descriptions on our website for the specific qualifications for each position:

History Students Present at Oral History Association

Professor Jess Rigelhaupt and four University of Mary Washington students were part of a panel on “Oral History and Documenting James Farmer’s Legacy at the University of Mary Washington” at the 2010 meeting of the Oral History Association. Christiane Lauer (class of 2011), Sadie Smith (class of 2011), Justin Mattos (class of 2010), MacKenzie Murphy (class of 2010), and Professor Rigelhaupt presented papers. Dr. Alphine Jefferson, Professor of History at Randolph-Macon College, served as chair and commentator for the panel. The students’ papers were based on interviews they conducted in Professor Rigelhaupt’s course, “Oral History and James Farmer,” which was taught in fall 2009. The interviews are available at farmeroralhistory.umwblogs.org, a website that documents Dr. Farmer’s contributions to UMW and was built as part of the course. Christiane Lauer’s and Sadie Smith’s participation in the Oral History Association annual meeting was generously supported by an Undergraduate Research Grant from the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office.
